Felipa Roman, LCSW

Psicoterapeuta

Hi everyone, my name is Felipa Roman, LCSW, and I’m a bilingual psychotherapist at Latinx Talk Therapy. Sessions with me are catered to the client and I hold the space with care, empathy and compassion. My clinical approach is centered on decolonizing therapy and practicing the therapy of our ancestors. This can look like incorporating our culture, processing the impact of systemic oppression, and consideration of spiritual healing practices. I like to center myself and the client to Mother Earth and the healing power of the Universe, in a reciprocal manner. My theoretical approach is eclectic, encompassing person-centered, relational, emotion-focused, somatic, strength-based, and humanistic elements.

My identities and experiences as a Latina and child of immigrants have provided me with an understanding of the healing power of ourselves,  culture and community, as well as the ongoing colonization and oppression against our people. The stigma related to mental health is often felt and I put in my efforts as a Latinx therapist to dismantle this notion. I accompany clients to come back to a reciprocal relationship with themselves, others, and the land. Some of the many things we can do in session are learn about emotions, process stressful experiences, build coping skills, enhance the mind-body connection, use the power of laughter, connect back to our inner child, to name a few. It is truly an honor to accompany you through the therapy journey.

No tienes que enfrentarlo solo/a, estoy aquí para ayudarte.

My previous work includes 10 years in the social service field and 5 years of therapy with children, adults, groups, and families. As a social worker, I have extensive knowledge of resources to promote healing because it is difficult to promote our wellness if our basic needs are not being met. In my therapy work, I have worked with survivors of various types of trauma with a focus on sexual trauma.

Conoce un poco más sobre mí.

My family is originally from Mexico and I was actually born in what is now called Utah, which I still consider the Indigenous Lands of Mexico. My first language is Spanish and I enjoy a good mix of Spanglish. I came to Chicago to pursue my studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I obtained my Bachelor’s in Psychology in 2015 and completed an internship with a domestic violence agency in Pilsen. I went on to work in care coordination at a federally-qualitfied health center in the heart of Little Village. In 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, I completed my Master’s in Social Work with a concentration in Mental Health. After graduation, i started working with survivors of sexual trauma at a non-profit agency. Later on, I did a year of private practice therapy work with The Urban Counselor. In 2022, I also became certified in Reiki Levels 1 & 2.

I am a therapist who goes to therapy so i have benefited so much from being the client, too. In my spare time i enjoy making art, being in community, somatic yoga, connecting with Mother Earth, tarot, henna, and enjoying my cats.

Mis Especialidades

My work is focused on working with Latinx people and other people of color. I can support clients experiencing trauma, adjustments, anxiety, depression, and intergenerational wounds. I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, also know as EMDR.
