The Body Is the Portal to Healing

Mucho del trauma que cargamos no vive en la mente, vive en el cuerpo. That’s the heart of Somatic Experiencing, a powerful healing approach developed by Dr. Peter Levine. It helps people release stuck stress and trauma by listening to the language of the body.

What Is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-based therapy that helps you gently process trauma without having to re-live it. Instead of only talking about what happened, SE invites you to notice your body’s sensations like tightness, warmth, shaking, or stillness, and follow the body’s natural way of releasing and recovering.

El cuerpo habla antes que la boca

Imagine your nervous system like un río. When trauma happens, it blocks the flow. Somatic Experiencing doesn’t force the river, it gently removes the rocks, so your energy can move again.

Why This Helps Latinx Communities

Many of us grew up with the message: “No llores. Sé fuerte. Get over it.” But when the body never gets to process pain, esa energia se queda atrapada.

Peter Levine’s work reminds us: trauma is not just the event, it’s what got stuck inside when we didn’t feel safe, seen, or supported.

What SE Might Look Like:

  • A therapist asking, “What do you notice in your body right now?”
  • Tracking small shifts, like a sigh, a flutter, or a release of tension
  • Pendulating between calm and activation (not going too deep too fast)
  • Moving slowly to build trust with your own body

“Pensé que ya había superado eso. But every time I talk about it, mi cuerpo se congela. SE helped me feel it, pero sin quedarme atrapada.”

Tu cuerpo no está roto, it’s wise. Somatic Experiencing teaches us that healing isn’t about forcing or fixing, it’s about gently listening and letting your body guide the way. At Latinx Talk Therapy, we hold space for your full healing mente, cuerpo, y corazón.
